Mara Hoffman’s eponymous brand was founded in 2000, following her graduation from Parsons School of Design in New York City. The label grew a following with its colorful bold prints and graphic swimwear which became her signature aesthetic. Following the birth of her son in 2015 and thoughts on the long term impacts of the fashion industry, Hoffman decided to focus her company on sustainability, and with that shift came a new look to the label. Swimwear is now being made of recycled polyester and nylon. Her ready to wear fabrics include Tencel, a sustainable textile made of wool pulp, organic linen, and Japanese cotton jacquards. The light hues and silhouettes reflect the brands vision for a simple, easy-going lifestyle that has less impacts on the planet. Uniform dressing, longevity in your clothing, and re-wearing are key concepts to Hoffman and her sustainable objective. Hoffman’s line comes from a place of joyous celebration of life and womanhood.
“Influencers and bloggers who change their outfits seven times a day, they’re sending the wrong message. It’s overconsumption. It isn’t style; it’s just showing off all your stuff. I want to expand the conversation about how we buy things—spending a little more, but buying less and wearing it a lot.”
